How To Be A Badass

We just finished the book "You Are A Badass" by Jen Sincero, and it made such an impact on us that we both knew we had to share this life-changing knowledge Jen dropped on us. It's difficult to condense it all into one post, though, so we're breaking it up into two parts. Part 1 below features the real life results Leah saw in her life after reading the book, and Part 2 (coming next week) will be a breakdown of Manda's key takeaways from the book.

Part 1:

I found this book when I took my sweet mom to the Tattered Cover bookstore in downtown Denver. I tried to distract myself in my boredom as she skipped around the store in her own version of heaven. She has always been a little book worm and encouraged my sister and I to read a lot when we were growing up. I was drawn to this book right away mostly because the cover is bright yellow and the title in big, bold letters reads: "You are a Badass." I thought to myself, "Why yes, I am." 

I'm so glad I picked up this book that day and took it home. I spent the next few weeks soaking up all the wisdom Jen Sincero poured into it. I kept telling my sister the things I was learning, convincing her she needed to read it too. I sent her home with my copy the next time she came to visit. 

"You are a Badass" is broken down into 5 parts to more clearly lead you into becoming your baddest self. The goal is to start at Point A and help you understand yourself and why you are the way you are, at this current moment. Then, Jen (the author) begins to build on that little by little, by giving you the tools and knowledge to embrace yourself. Finally, Part 5 is about "How to Kick Some Ass". 

While reading Part 5, I felt ready and equipped to start making my own power moves. I started using the tools and methods provided in this book in my own life. I had been feeling very complacent in my life, not having any short term goals. My biggest struggle was seeing my sister be a boss in her career, but not having any direction for myself in my career goals. 

I've been all over the place with my passions, goals and career. Since moving to Denver, I wanted to focus on the restaurant and culinary industry. I was eight months into it and I was still serving tables, much like I had been doing for the past 5 years. While this occupation provides good, quick cash, it does not provide a challenge or many opportunities to progress. 

In Chapter 24, "Money, Your New Best Friend," Jen talks about how whatever you are striving for, whether it be money, a promotion, etc., is right there for your taking. If you want something bad enough, it is there for you, you just have to find it and take it. I thought about this for weeks, I thought about it all the time. I wasn't even sure what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something more. 

A lightbulb went off in my head as I saw a job opportunity come up at my restaurant. Since I had been working for this company, I had seen a handful of managers come in and out of the position. I thought to myself "I could do this job better than any of those people." I set up a meeting with my General Manager and Regional Manager later that week. I prepared by writing down all the reasons that I deserved the job of Restaurant Manager and I soaked it in. In my head, I already had the job, I already won them over. 

When I sat down in the meeting, I confidentially told them why I wanted the job and why I deserved it. I walked out of the meeting as the newest Restaurant Manager of Atomic Cowboy. I put my mind to it, I thought it into existence, and it happened for me. 

Believe in yourself and others will too. You are what you say you are.   

The reoccurring and final point in each chapter is simple, but life changing: "Love Yourself." Just living by these two words can drastically change your life. I challenge you to stop being so hard on yourself and to instead start fiercely loving yourself. 

Loving yourself means instead of feeling bad about the way your body looks, get a yoga membership and have it come out of your bank account automatically each month, so that you have the motivation to go enough times a week to make it worth the money. 

Loving yourself means you need to ghost the loser guy you are talking about who doesn't make you feel special, then take yourself out for a hot solo sushi date. 

Loving yourself means spending time everyday doing what makes you feel good, whether it be meditation, reading, or writing. 

Do things to improve yourself. Put yourself first everyday. Love on the people who love you. Radiate positivity and good vibes and the universe will return it to you.
